battle strategy
In 1863, the Battle of Chickamauga occurred through September 19 to September 20. In Tennessee, the Confederate and Union troops met at Chickamauga creek. The confederates were lead by Braxton Bragg, and the union troops were lead by William Rosecrans. The Union's goal was to push the Confederates out into Chattanooga, Tennessee, which was north of Chickamauga. Rosecran's army divided and headed south, while Bragg's army assaulted the line of Union troops. Rosecrans ordered more troops to be brought in, and they arrived on the 19th. But because Bragg had more troops, the Union was forced to be pushed backwards. Unfortunately for the Union, during a shift of the troops, a hole was created and the south pushed through. The South won the Battle of Chickamauga. In the end, an estimated 16,170 Union troops died, and 18,454 Confederate troops died.
